Three invests £4.8 million in network upgrade project in Hull

  • 4G on Three coming to Hull in 2015
  • Latest network technology will give customers in Hull quality, reliable experience

Three plan to introduce 4G to Hull next year, with over two-thirds of sites upgraded to 4G by the end of 2015. Further sites will be upgraded to 4G in 2016.

The introduction of 4G will see customers enjoy a better network experience and increased speeds throughout the day with the performance during peak periods seeing particular improvement.

As well as adding 4G to the network, Three is also investing to improve the cables which link sites to the network. These cables provide the vital link between sites and the rest of the network, including the internet. CityFibre, which builds fibre cable networks, has already started work on laying these cables in Hull.

Three’s network in Hull has previously had to rely on heavily congested microwave links, which sent information over the air between sites. Adding high speed cables under the ground will dramatically improve the performance of the network in Hull.

The upgrade will see customers get a faster and more reliable connection to the network, dramatically improving the experience they receive on both 3G and 4G. Customers in Hull will start to see improvements in the network from March 2015.

Bryn Jones, Three’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “These improvements will completely change the experience of our customers in Hull. They will see increased internet speeds and be able to enjoy a more reliable network.

“We know customers in Hull haven’t received the experience they expect recently, but over the next two years we will work hard to bring them a quality experience on Three and they’ll be able to take advantage of all these improvements, including 4G, at no extra cost.”

4G in Hull

We plan to add 4G to Hull from April 2015. By the end of 2015, our target is to have 66% sites in Hull will be using 4G. The remaining sites will be upgraded to 4G in 2016.

Backhaul improvements

The laying of fibre cables needed for the backhaul improvements is already underway and the project will take up to 12 months to complete. We will be able to use the new backhaul infrastructure to improve the performance of individual sites throughout the year until all sites are using the improved backhaul by the end of 2015.
